Moving With Pets: A Stress-Free Relocation Guide
06 Aug 2026 · 6 min read · by Gati Packers and Movers
Your dog does not know the family is moving; your cat only knows the carriers have appeared and the furniture is disappearing. A move is stressful for pets — but with a little preparation, the journey can be the calmest part of their week. Here is how to do it right.
Start two weeks early
- Familiarise the crate. Bring the travel crate home early and let your pet eat and nap in it. A known crate is a den; an unknown crate is a cage.
- Visit the vet. Get a fitness-to-travel certificate and up-to-date vaccination records — rabies is mandatory. Ask what your route specifically needs.
- Prepare a comfort kit: a familiar blanket, one unwashed t-shirt of yours, and the favourite chewed toy.
Never in the goods truck
This is the one rule to remember: pets must never travel in the household-goods truck. It has no climate control, no attendant and no safe space for an animal. Pets travel separately — in an attended, climate-controlled vehicle by road, or by air in an IATA-standard crate. Anyone who offers to put your dog in the moving truck should be politely refused.
Road or air?
- By road works well for short and medium distances — an attendant travels with the animal, with scheduled water and walk breaks and photo updates at each halt.
- By air makes sense for long routes: hours instead of days. Travel is timed to avoid peak afternoon heat, and snub-nosed breeds (pugs, bulldogs, Persian cats) get special routing because their breathing needs extra care.
On travel day
- Feed a light meal three to four hours before travel — never a full stomach at departure.
- Keep water available; do not sedate unless your vet specifically advises it.
- Move your pet when a family member can receive them — never into a new empty home alone.
Let the family handle the chaos
The smoothest pet moves ride alongside a full house shift, sequenced so the humans deal with the boxes and the animal gets the calm. Our pet relocation service handles crates, vet coordination and attended travel across India. Tell us about your pet and we will build the plan around them.
