How to Pack Fragile Items Safely (Glass, Crockery & TV)

Around ninety percent of moving damage happens because of poor packing, not rough driving. The good news: fragile items survive almost any journey when they are wrapped the right way. Here is how professional packers do it.

Start with the right material

Newspaper and old bedsheets are not packing material. Use 3-ply and 5-ply corrugated cartons, bubble wrap, foam sheets, packing paper, stretch film and corner guards. Buying by specification — not from the corner shop on moving morning — is the difference between "reached" and "reached intact".

Crockery and glassware

• Wrap each plate and glass individually in packing paper, then bundle in bubble wrap.
• Use partitioned cartons so pieces never touch each other.
• Pack plates on their edge (vertical), not flat — they resist pressure far better.
• Fill every gap with crushed paper so nothing shifts.

Television and electronics

• The original box is best. If it is gone, use a fitted carton with thick foam on all sides.
• Wrap the screen in foam first, then bubble — never let anything hard touch it.
• Transport a TV standing upright, never lying flat.
• Photograph the cable connections before unplugging so reassembly is exact.

Mirrors, glass tabletops and framed art

• Tape a large X across the glass so it holds together if it cracks.
• Add corner protectors, then bubble wrap, then a flat carton.
• Always carry and load these vertically, marked "GLASS — THIS SIDE UP".

The kitchen extras

Seal masala and liquid containers with tape so nothing spills. Pack the mixer, gas stove and small appliances in their own wrapped cartons. Knives and sharp tools should be sheathed and clearly labelled.

Label everything

Mark each fragile carton with its contents, the room it belongs to, and "FRAGILE — HANDLE WITH CARE". A numbered packing list means you know within minutes if a box is missing, not after a month.
