Local vs Intercity Moving: What's the Difference?
08 Aug 2026 · 5 min read · by Gati Packers and Movers
"Shifting" covers two very different jobs: moving across town and moving across the country. They differ in packing, pricing, trucks and timelines — and knowing which one you are booking helps you ask the right questions.
Distance and time
A local move stays within the same city and is almost always a same-day job — packed in the morning, delivered by evening. An intercity move travels between cities and takes anywhere from a day to nearly a week, depending on the route. Because of that, intercity dates are committed in writing, and the supervisor updates you at each leg.
Packing depth
Local moves need solid, careful packing. Intercity moves need more: every carton faces thousands of vibrations, a few hard brakes and at least two rounds of handling. So intercity packing uses double-walled boxes, extra foam and lamination, and nothing loose in the truck — every gap is braced.
Trucks and sharing
Local moves use a vehicle sized to your home — a small tempo for a 1 BHK, a larger truck for a villa. Intercity moves add a choice:
- Dedicated truck — carries only your goods, door to door. Fastest and safest; costs more.
- Shared (part-load) — your goods travel with one or two other consignments on the same route. Slower by a day or two, but noticeably cheaper.
Pricing
Local pricing is driven mostly by volume, floors and lift access. Intercity pricing adds distance, truck type and transit insurance on the declared value. In both cases, an honest quote is itemised — packing, labour, vehicle, insurance — so you can compare like with like.
Which do you need?
It is simple: same city means local; different city means intercity. Many moves are a mix — a local shift that needs a month of storage, or an intercity move with a car sent separately. A good mover puts all of it into one quote with one point of contact. Tell us your route and we will suggest the right option.
