How Packers and Movers Charges Are Calculated in India

"Kitna lagega?" is the first question everyone asks — and the honest answer is: it depends on a few clear things. Once you know what drives a moving quote, you can predict the cost and even bring it down. Here is exactly how packers and movers charges are calculated in India.
1. Volume of goods
The single biggest factor. More stuff means a bigger truck, more packing material and more labour. A 1 BHK and a 3 BHK are simply different jobs. This is why a proper survey — in person or on video — matters: it measures your actual volume instead of guessing.
2. Distance
A move across town costs a fraction of a move across the country. For intercity moves, the route and fuel decide a large part of the price, which is why a local shift and an intercity move are quoted so differently.
3. Floors and lift access
A ground-floor move with a working service lift is quick. A third-floor walk-up means honest stair labour, and it should be listed in the quote upfront — never sprung on you at the gate.
4. Packing level
Standard wrapping costs less than full export-grade packing with crating for glass and art. You choose the level; the quote reflects it. Packing your own books and clothes can trim the bill — leave the kitchen, electronics and furniture to the crew.
5. Insurance and extras
Transit insurance is a small percentage of the declared value and the cheapest protection in the whole move. Add-ons like vehicle transport, storage or full unpacking are separate, clearly-listed lines.
How to keep the cost down
- Declutter before the survey — you pay to move volume, so move less.
- Pick a mid-week, mid-month date — month-ends and weekends cost more.
- Book a shared truck for smaller intercity loads if a day or two extra is fine.
- Get an itemised quote — if a quote is one round number with no break-up, that number is padded.
The golden rule: the quote you sign should be the amount you pay. Get a free, itemised quote and see every rupee accounted for.
